I actually love getting a process question, because its something people forget mid-fap, lol. So I’ll explain step by step:

Unless I’m answering a tumblr question, I always work directly from a reference to make sure my anatomy is correct.  Nothing stings more than looking yourself up on rule34.xxx and seeing the “bad anatomy” tag next to something you did. I usually have plenty of pose references handy in case I feel like one pose would work better than another.

When I do the first sketch, I usually make a few tweaks with broader lines that I continue to tighten overtime.

When I’m happy with the sketch, I draw the lineart using Medibang Paint Pro. By this step, the final pose has been decided on.

After that, I move on to the flats.  The good thing about photoshop is that the lighting and color scheme can be adjusted at any time because of Adjustment layers.  So this palette is just used as a rough draft if anything.

I determine light sources next. This is more based on training and gut instinct as to where the light is supposed to hit the figure. But, its a safe practice to assume that every three dimensional object being hit with a light source will have a cool back-light on the opposite side.

After that, its more about implementing the lighting where it fits and figuring out the rest of the image in the meantime.

And there you go! Finished and ready for primetime!
