I hear the drums echoing tonight
But she hears only whispers of some quiet conversation
She’s coming in, 12:30 flight
The moonlit wings reflect the stars that guide me towards salvation
I stopped an old man along the way
Hoping to find some long forgotten words or ancient melodies
He turned to me as if to say, “Hurry boy, it’s waiting there for you"It’s gonna take a lot to take me away from you
There’s nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do
I bless the rains down in Africa
Gonna take some time to do the things we never hadThe wild dogs cry out in the night
As they grow restless, longing for some solitary company
I know that I must do what’s right
As sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus above the Serengeti
I seek to cure what’s deep inside, frightened of this thing that I’ve becomeIt’s gonna take a lot to drag me away from you
There’s nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do
I bless the rains down in Africa
Gonna take some time to do the things we never hadHurry boy, she’s waiting there for youIt’s gonna take a lot to drag me away from you

Genius.com lyrical analysis:
Throughout the song there are references to the boy taking in the sights and sounds, maybe knowing that he will never hear/see them again “I hear the drums echoing tonight” and “The wild dogs cry out in the night/As they grow restless longing for some solitary company”
- His lover, is flying in to meet him and then he will leave with her, hence stopping to ask the old man
- Some long forgotten words or ancient melodies”
- In hope of quickly deepening his knowledge of Africa or gaining knowledge that would otherwise be lost to him when/if he leaves, it is like a memoir to take with him, possibly his last memory of encountering a respected elder African.
- Stopping an old man at random on the chance that he has some off-the-cuff wisdom to share seems quite optimistic on the part of our narrator. Perhaps he is expecting to encounter a Magical Girl
- The old man “turns to him AS IF to say” giving him a look that insinuates absurdity in the question. He’ll need to hurry along, for it’s something he must find on his own.
- These lines are evocative of the idiom, “wild horses couldn’t drag me” – a strong assertion of the sheer force-of-will of the narrator, who has absolute resolve to stay with the subject.
- It’s deliberately ambiguous whether the subject “you” is the girl whose plane is due in Verse 1, or Africa itself, or even something not explicitly stated by the lyrics, but his emotion toward this is clear.
- If the subject is a person, this is a powerful statement of love and dedication, and perhaps, given “do the things we never had,” sexual passion as well?

- As a missionary in Africa, perhaps the devotion he must be dragged away from is that to God. As his human companion is flying in to see him, and he wishes to embrace her, it could be a pull toward her away from God that drags him – or his duty dragging him back toward his mission and reason for being in Africa? There’s nothing a hundred men of God could ever do, to stop the human need for companionship
